Woodvale Elementary is a local Lafayette area school and their largest fundraiser is a BBQ Chicken dinner sale. The night before the sales, volunteers stay up throughout the night and cook 5,000 chicken halves. This year the colony volunteered to assist in the cooking. Our jobs varied from brothers helping marinate to helping put in and take out chicken from the giant cooking oven. The event was run by our AAB President Mr. Kim Guidry.

"I also had the opportunity to work with these young men in the spring of 2010 during time in which I was in charge of cooking 5000 chicken halves for an elementary school fund raiser.  The colony arrived full force to assist however we needed their service.  The candidates worked from 10 PM on a Saturday until 6 am the Sunday morning."

It is a week long fundraising campaign in which male representative from organizations across campus compete to raise money to benefit their national philanthropy, The Children's Miracle Network. The week ends with a male beauty pageant and talent competition.

August 20, 2011   Games of Acadiana   Games of Acadiana is the signature fundraising event for Miles Perret Cancer Services. It is a family-centered event that brings competitors together for a good cause. Members are involved in individual service in addition to Colony projects

While the colony places huge stress on organized community service, we also put a strong emphasis on individual service as well. Throughout each semester, members are required to complete 6 hours of community service a semester either on their own, or through events advertised through or promoted by the colony

Colony has advocated for their non-profit partners to help create awareness about the issues partners address. This should help others in the community understand the importance of supporting these causes.

Working through events the colony either hosted or participated in, we have raise awareness for and pushed other organizations to support these causes. Our Kick Out Cancer Kickball Tournament introduced students to the Lafayette Leukemia and Lymphoma and because of this tournament the society has asked one of our own brothers, Chris Groh, to be a candidate in their Man of The Year campaign. His campaign will begin later this semester and we have started working on plans for our 2nd annual tournament.

We have also worked to develop a relationship with the local Toys for Tots organizationin Lafayette. After volunteering with them in November 2010, we worked with the Student Government Association to allow Toys for Tots to have a collection and information table at UL's annual Sneaux Day event. Before the event, students were encouraged to bring toys to donate through emails and flyers that were sent out to all students, faculty, and staff. During the event, the Marines were collecting toys as well as passing out information and talking with different organizations for more volunteer opportunities.

Colony includes one of the organizations that are partners in the Helping Hand Initiative in its fundraising or community service projects.

The colony is always looking to include all of the members of the Helping Hand Initiative into any community service project that is hosted or participated in. In the upcoming months, we will be participating and hosting events that will include all three members of the Helping Hand Initiative. In the upcoming weeks, our three Up Till Dawn teams will be finishing up their fundraising efforts for St. Jude. We are also working with our Greek Council to create a build specifically for the UL Greeks. Our goal is to build a "UL Greek" house, where different greek organizations will volunteer to work, each picking a different weekend, and build a house for 16 weeks straight. By the end of the campaign, Habit for Humanity will donate a house to a family in need on behalf of the UL Greek community.

Last year, the colony participated in a few different events that supported St. Jude's Children Research Hospital. In June, members from the colony assist the local St. Jude's Community Office by volunteering for their 2010 St. Jude Telethon. The goal of the telethon was to raise money by telling raffle tickets for an array prizes that were donated by members of the community. Items included a 2010 Ford Focus, various gift cards, and a brand new built "St. Jude Dream Home" in a neighborhood just outside Lafayette. At the telethon, we were able to help out by answering phones and taking payment information for raffle tickets, count tickets sold, and work behind the scenes operations. The event raised $1,015,600 for St. Jude and was a huge success for the Lafayette community.

The colony also created three teams to particpate in UL's Up Till Dawn fundraising campaign. The UL Up Till Dawn organization is solely created to work with students to raise money in and around the Lafayette community during a four month fundraising campaign. We started the campaign at the annual Up Till Dawn: Letter Writing Party, where we wrote letters to family, friends, and alumni asking them to donate to St. Jude in the name of Sigma Nu. We will be finishing up the campaign at the end of February with the Up Till Dawn Finale event.

At the end of last semester, the colony was able to work with the university and the Student Government to set up a St. Jude Christmas Card table at the annual Sneaux Day. During the event, we offered students the opportunity to make Christmas Cards to send to the children at St. Jude's Hospital who were to sick to leave for the holiday season. We brought markers, stickers, and paper out as well as pre-made cards for individuals who just wanted to write a personal message. The colony also sold bake goods and asked for small donations to give to St. Jude.

Colony has incorporated education about the cause being supported into at least one fundraising event.

Our annual Kick out Cancer Kickball Tournament gave the colony an opportunity to educate students and the community about not only the effects of Leukemia and Lymphoma but also about ways people could get involved with the Lafayette Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Participants of the tournament received information on the society and diseases it raises money to fight, along with the people who suffer from them. The Society sent members to talk with participants and educate, including the individual who's campaign the tournament was benefit.

Colony incorporated the values of Sigma Nu into all Service and Philanthropy events

At every community service and philanthropy the colony attended, hosted, or participated in, we prided ourselves on our reputation throughout the event. We always always acted in ways that represented Sigma Nu to the highest regard and were constantly compliment for it. We held true to our values and ensured that each member walked away recognizing the good that came from all the hard work put into each event. When available, the colony held a period of reflections following events to discuss the impact of our work.

Kappa Sigma/Sigma Nu Kick Out Cancer Kickball Tournament:

The colony co-hosted a kickball tournament with Kappa Sigma Fraternity to raise money for the Lafayette Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's "Man of the Year" campaign. The event raised $1,800 and was donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Chris Catalanotto, a candidate participating in the "Man of Year" campaign as well as well as a cancer survivor and a Lambda Chi Alpha alumnus from UL Lafayette. The registration for teams was opened up to the university as well as the community.

Phi Mu and Sigma Nu Trick or Treat for Canned Goods:

The colony co-hosted a service project with the ladies of Phi Mu throughout a local neighborhood in Lafayette. The event took place on Halloween and members of each organization dressed up in Halloween costumes and separated into various teams going door to door to collect canned goods, in which we donated to a local area food bank. Members of the organizations, as well as community members, had a great time with the idea of taking a childhood past time and turning it towards a good cause. Throughout the evening, different members actually met alumni from both Sigma Nu and Phi Mu chapters from across the state. They were elated to see their organizations working together and giving back to the community. After the event, we recieved numerous compliments from neighbors who we had mutual contacts with and all said they are looking forward to our event next year.

"During the fall semester Phi Mu and Sigma Nu decided to have a philanthropy event together and go trick or treating for canned goods.  The ladies of Phi Mu really enjoyed getting together to lend a helping hand with Sigma Nu."
